What is CDMA2000?
CDMA continues to advance rapidly and its strong performance
is indicative of the technology's leading position in the emerging
markets for wireless data and voice communications, especially in
areas such as Asia and the Americas. CDMA2000TM is a 3G
technology that is based on the older IS-95 CDMA standard.
International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) gives the
global standard for wireless communication in the third generation
(3G). CDMA2000 satisfies all the service requirements as specified by
the IMT-2000 standard for a 3G technology.
About CDMA2000 Technology
CDMA2000 is a family of standards which includes CDMA2000 1X
and CDMA2000 1xEV. The first version of CDMA2000 to be deployed is the
CDMA2000 1X which can provide double the data rates as compared to
cdmaOne, with peak data rates upto 307 kbps and an average data rate
of 144 kbps. It uses the same frequency allocations as that of cdmaOne,
which is 1.25 MHz per carrier. As a result CDMA2000 is backward
compatible with cdmaOne. CDMA2000 1X is an IS-2000 standard.
The CDMA2000 1xEV is the next (Evolutionary) phase of the
CDMA2000 standards family. This is divided into CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and
CDMA2000 1xEV-DV. The EV-DO standard supports higher speeds for Data
Only. This is achieved by allocating a separate carrier for the data
traffic. Although CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is backward compatible with cdmaOne,
the service provider has to keep aside a carrier for data
communications. The separate carrier promises to provide data speeds
greater than 2 Mbps under ideal conditions. The CDMA2000 1xEV-DV
standard brings back the Data and Voice to a single carrier, at the
same time providing higher speeds. By the end of June 2003 the number of CDMA2000 subscribers
crossed the 54 million mark.
