What is UMTSTM?
UMTS stands for Unified Mobile Telecommunication System, which is one
of ITU's proposals for 3G mobile cellular technology. UMTS promises
service speeds of 2 Mbps, which will allow for a wide range of
services including video conferencing. UMTS is the next logical
evolutionary step for GSM networks, as it is based on the same GSM
architecture. UMTS allows many more applications to be introduced to a
worldwide base of users and provides a vital link between today's
multiple GSM systems and the ultimate single worldwide standard for
all mobile telecommunications, International Mobile
Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000).
The
Technology
The terms
W-CDMA and UMTS are interchangeably used. W-CDMA stands for Wideband
Code Division Multiple Access. W-CDMA is called so because its channel
is four times wider than the current CDMA2000 1X channel. Which means
it needs a minimum channel allocation of 5 MHz. As a result, W-CDMA
requires a complete modification of current base station equipments as
well as the mobile terminal.
W-CDMA
will use variable/selectable direct sequence spread spectrum chip
rates to allow data rates as low as 8 kbps upto 2Mbps. W-CDMA can be
implemented on 2G GSM systems by migrating via GPRS and EDGE.
Worldwide
W-CDMA (UMTS)
networks have already been deployed in countries like Japan,
Australia, Italy, UK, Sweden and a lot more launches are expected in
the near future.
